You’ve You’ve probably noticed the small disclaimer on every salt package, “This salt supplies iodide, a necessary nutrient,” or “This salt does not contain iodide, a necessary nutrient.”
But have you ever wondered why?
Iodine is a trace element essential for a number of critical functions in the body, including fetal brain development, immune support, and thyroid and breast health. Yet surprisingly more than two billion people around the world are deficient. Public health experts report that adding small amounts of iodine back to salt may be one of the simplest and most cost-effective steps to tackle Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) in over 118 countries.
Iodine is also gaining attention for it’s use in cancer prevention, and in some cases, cancer treatment.
“The good thing about iodine is, iodine has apoptotic properties,” says Dr. David Brownstein. “Meaning it can stop a cancer cell from just continually dividing, dividing, dividing until it kills somebody. Iodine can stop this continuum wherever it catches it and hopefully reverse it, but at least put the brakes on what is happening.”
I’ve used iodine drops (under my doctor’s direction) for a few years. The first thing I noticed is I lost weight. I rub 5 drops on my throat every morning (I put the drops in a bit of Home Health almond oil then apply to my throat).
My doctor recommended applying iodine directly to my throat because I have a number thyroid nodules (I just had the largest biopsied. Thankfully it was benign).
*A word of caution if you choose to use iodine without the direction of health practitioner, start low (1 to 3 drops daily).
Pay attention to your symptoms.
Some people experience heart racing. If you do, immediately discontinue. My husband takes up to 3 drops daily without adverse side effects. My doctor initially told me to take 10 drops a day in split doses, and had I no problems.
I strongly advise working with a holistic health practitioner familiar with the benefits and dangers of iodine supplementation.
I use Wellness Resources Iosol Iodine as recommended by my holistic MD.
There are however, several forms and brands of iodine on the market. Use caution.
